Playhouse East is an exciting new home for theatre, comedy, and creativity in the heart of East London. Housed in a beautiful converted 1920s factory, our venue is alive with energy, ambition, and a love for new work.

Whether it’s bold new writing, offbeat character comedy, or something you can’t quite describe yet — this is where ideas take shape, shows find their feet, and artists get the space and support to fly.

This July, we’re opening our doors to TEN THEATRE PRODUCTIONS and TEN COMEDIANS to preview their work before hitting the Fringe. If you’ve got a show and you’re ready to test it out before hitting the madness of the fringe, we are the space for you.

WHAT WE’RE OFFERING

  • Up to 3 performance slots over 2 days (1 matinee + 2 evenings) or whatever you require.

  • Full Day Tech Get-In and Dress Rehearsal For Theatre Shows on the day of your first show (Comedians downstairs can set up in the space from 16:00)

  • 50/50 box office split.

  • Option to bring your own technician or hire one of ours (additional fee)

  • Free 1-year membership to our Pay What You Can rehearsal space scheme. Activated immanently upon acceptance, so you can start rehearsing your show in our spaces immediately.

  • Full promotional support via our social channels, newsletter, and our vast local network and community.

  • A networking drinks for all the artists and companies taking part in our preview season.

  • A passionate, supportive team behind you, in one of the most exciting venues for new work in the East End.

OUR SPACES

  • Theatre Shows will take place in our theatre upstairs which has a capacity of 100. The seating can be arrange in any orientation and seats taken out to reduce capacity.

  • Comedy Stand Up Shows will take place in our downstairs space. The affectionally know “Cafe Hebe”. This intimate space works perfectly for comedy and is home to our monthly comedy night (Josh Glanc’s Super Fun (crazy) Comedy Show with friends). Capacity of 50.

  • We have a PA system and basic lighting rig. (A detailed tech spec will be given to you on acceptance. We are also happy for you to hire and bring your own tech.)

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • We’re interested in supporting artists and companies with a clear voice and strong storytelling instincts. Whether it’s scripted or devised, solo or ensemble, sharp stand-up or the abstract avant-garde. We want artists who are creating exciting, original work with intent.

    WHAT WE ASK

  • You include our logo and the line “Supported by Playhouse East” on any Edinburgh promotional materials (flyers, posters, etc.)

  • We ask that we receive a minimum of £250 from the box office split on each show to cover our costs. If this is not reached in ticket sales we ask for this to be covered by the company/artists.

  • For Comedians using the downstairs space we ask for a £70 upfront deposit which will be deducted from the venues 50% split after the show (i.e returned to you).
